The Superb Follow-Up To BOLDR’s Musou Black Venture Singularity
SINGAPORE: BOLDR released the ultra-dark Venture Singularity in August 2022 to an outstanding response with the brand’s first ever use of Musou Black paint, which absorbs 99.4% of light. The success of this supermassive black hole-themed timepiece prompted the company to work on follow-up watches modeled after thematically dark elements. This latest release utilizes a BOLDR Safari case inspired by a recently discovered bird-of-paradise species, named the Vogelkop Superb.
The Vogelkop Superb Bird of Paradise (Lophorina niedda) is found in the West Papua region of Indonesia. Previously thought to be the same species as the Greater Superb Bird of Paradise, the Vogelkop Superb is characterized by striking black plumage, iridescent green & blue feathers on the head, and a long, wire-like tail. Two key differentiators between the Vogelkop Superb and the Greater Superb species is a crescent-shaped cape (instead of oval-shaped) and a side-stepping (not bouncing) maneuver during its courting ritual.
In this elaborate courtship display, males raise their ornate, jet-black feathers and perform a dance to attract curious females, an exceptional example of sexual selection in action. The BOLDR Safari Vogelkop Superb not only embodies the bird's aesthetic, but its unrelenting determination which speaks directly to BOLDR’s brand ethos - putting in effort and persistence towards an achievement.
The watch has a solid stainless steel build measuring a comfy 40mm size with an integrated bracelet. The case is coated with DeepPVD, a darker shade of PVD to complement the dial. The dial is painted in Musou Black with Super AR coating, which are multiple layers of anti-reflective coating to preserve its ultra-dark aesthetic. Topping it off is custom artwork of the bird set against an exhibition case back.
Resting on top of a 120-clicks bezel are iridescent “eyes” that can be used for tracking elapsed time - both the “eyes” and hands are coated with Japan Super-LumiNova®. Lastly, the caseback depicts topographic artwork of the Vogelkop Superb bird of paradise, a tribute to its uniqueness and a call to raise awareness of threats to their natural habitat.
As we speak, deforestation and agriculture expansion in the West Papua region of Indonesia are destroying their suitable habitat and causing a decline in their population.
