BOLDR Releases A New Odyssey Dive Watch Inspired By The Marine Genome Project
SINGAPORE, December 2023: BOLDR Supply Co. is releasing a full-titanium 40mm Odyssey dive watch in support of the Marine Genome Project (MGP), a non-profit organization with a mission to preserve the genetic diversity of marine life and promote healthy ocean ecosystems. The watch is open for pre-order now on BOLDR’s website and will be worn by members of the MGP team as they seek new discoveries around the globe.
BOLDR was approached by MGP’s team leader Daniel Ortega in mid-2022 seeking sponsorship for the project, but it quickly blossomed into a collaboration. Founder Leon Leong felt that BOLDR could contribute much more by creating a custom timepiece in support of their message; to protect ocean biodiversity not just by studying ways to prevent threats to marine populations, but to also make that information accessible. Their team of professional & citizen scientists collect eDNA samples and analyze data to uncover new methods of understanding species evolution, ecological patterns, and potentially life-altering medicines, to name a few.
“Our main mission is to use marine genetics to increase conservation efforts. This can look like a couple different things: increasing access to genetic tools, creating protocols that are easier to understand, and publishing materials in different languages and reading levels - a lot of scientific material is just in English”, says Daniel, speaking to BOLDR in their June 2023 interview.
After bouncing ideas and implementing suggestions from the MGP team, BOLDR unveiled the Odyssey MGP in full titanium from bezel to bracelet, delivering superior resistance to the elements at a pleasant weight of just 130 grams. The dial carries a glow-in-the-dark Z-DNA strand (left-handed helix) surrounded by bubbles, representing the notion that DNA holds the answers to many beneficial discoveries for marine populations and humans alike.
Built from sturdy titanium, the watch sits comfortably on the wrist at 40mm and has a quick-adjust buckle with up to 3 easy length-adjustments. Slide between the points to suit how your wrist feels throughout the day, or to accommodate dive suits and layers of clothing. The watch’s screw-down crown secures 300m of water resistance, and the case is crisply finished with vertical brushing to accentuate its angular lugs.
